The obstinate obliviousness of Scranton’s municipal unions — particularly the police and firefighters’ — would be funny if the stakes weren’t so high. As Scranton hurtles headlong toward insolvency, due largely to its overly generous but woefully underfunded union pension plans, the unions are threatening to sue the city for its fiscally prudent decision to cancel scheduled cost-of-living raises for current retirees.

Apparently, the union heads either A) think that city administrators and the office of the state Auditor General are lying about Scranton’s dire financial condition and that the city is, in essence, hiding money, or B) know the end is near and are furiously bleeding the plans (and the city and the taxpayers) for every last red cent before the bottom drops out.

For what it’s worth, I’m going with B.
