It’s official: Mitt Romney will not run a third unsuccessful campaign for the presidency.
In conference calls with advisers and supporters, Mr. Romney said: “After putting considerable thought into making another run for president, I’ve decided it is best to give other leaders in the Party the opportunity to become our next nominee.
“I did not want to make it more difficult for someone else to emerge who may have a better chance of becoming the president.”
Deciding who that someone else may be is sure to be a messy process. If the Republicans want to win the White House, they will need a stronger ticket than C. Thurston Howell III and Count Chocula.
Mr. Romney’s departure seems to clear the way for Jeb Bush to enter the race against the presumed Democratic nominee, Hillary Clinton. One out-of-touch oligarch exits, two more stand ready to replace him.
