When President Obama declared that “America does not stand still and neither will I,” during his State of the Union speech, he was referring to Congress in general and an obstructionist GOP in particular. As Republicans quarrel among themselves about who’s their leader (just how many responses took place following Obama’s address? three? four?) and what direction to take going into this year’s midterm elections, the country is legislatively hamstrung by the party’s collective distaste for the president and its internal civil war between party moderates — you know, the folks who believe in compromise in the name of crafting laws — and the tea party’s far-right flamethrowers who seem intent on simply blowing up the federal government.

I believe it was politically smart of Obama to finally try and “go it alone.”
