On Thursday night, The Times-Tribune sports department will host the annual coaches meeting to select pairings for the 67th annual Lynett Memorial Basketball Tournament.
We will announce those matchups via Twitter @SportsTT as soon as they are selected. Then, be sure to see The Times-Tribune on Friday for a more in-depth story.
The boys field includes Scranton Prep, Dunmore, Scranton and Holy Cross. The girls teams are Dunmore, Scranton Prep, Abington Heights and Scranton.
Scranton Prep will be looking for its fifth straight boys championship and 21st overall. No team has won more than four consecutive titles, accomplished twice, by Prep (1983-86) and Dunmore (1992-96).
On the girls side, Dunmore is the two-time defending champion and one of three teams with four championships. Abington Heights and Scranton Prep also have each hoisted the Lynett girls banner four times.
The tournament tips off Wednesday, Dec. 27 with girls games at 1 p.m. and 2:30 p.m. Boys games are set for 6 p.m. and 7:30 p.m.
Then on Friday, Dec. 29, we will play the championship doubleheader — girls, 6 p.m., boys, 7:30 — preceded by consolation games in the afternoon (girls, 1; boys, 2:30).
All games will be played at the Lackawanna Student Union.
