Ok fans, it’s Thursday and, I am hoping we don’t get too cold tonight.

It’s time for the gun to go off for the postseason in track and field. Well, track for tonight, but that is an argument we can have later. I always support our throwers and see no reason why we can’t start at 4 p.m. with field event relays. I, like a bad lawyer, lose my case every time.

The 62nd Jordan Relays is today at 6 p.m. at Scranton Memorial Stadium. This is an exciting time for the athletes, because before each branches off into their individual event training for the conference and district championship meets, they have one final time to put their skills together and work as a team. Believe me when I tell you, these kids love the relay events. For no other reason, this meet continues to a popular event in the conference. Are there tweaks I’d like to see? Sure. But tradition still means something and this is a big event.

Some quick things to keep an eye on:
  • Scranton’s Ky’Ron Harbin competed in the 400 relay event during the 61st annual Jordan Relays
    Butch Comegys / Staff Photographer

Scranton: Not quite 100 percent healthy but with no field events I expect Ky’Ron Harbin to have a big impact tonight. Also, his sister, Keke, who is a freshman, could steal the show.

  • Montrose and Susquehanna: Here are two teams the Montrose boys and the Susquehanna girls who could win a couple races tonight and serve notice of their strength. They did have to run dual meets Wednesday, so I expect both teams to focus on only a couple of races.

  • Abington Heights: Listen, I talked with junior Katie Dammer after the Lady Comets won the LTC Division I title and she said “Unfinished business.” I have to believe she was referring to Jordan Relays where last season a mishap in the first relay resulted in a DQ and the Lady Comets finished second in the team race. When Dammer takes the baton in the Distance Medley, I expect a big time effort.

  • Weather: Look for whatever reason, Global Warming, Climate Change, call it what you want, this stinks. It’s May 4 and it’s going to be cold. And look, SNOW on Monday? Absurd. Now, the distance runners won’t be too upset at the cooler weather, but sprinters, well, we are a very picky lot. Any way, coaches will be cautious with the weather, aiming to have a good competitive meet, but also wanting to stay healthy. So, yes, Mother Nature, you still always win!

PERFORMANCE LISTS

Thanks to Adam Wilmot at Wil-Time, I am able to provide you with the seeds for tonight’s event. Remember, this meet is run as one track event. Class 3A and Class 2A teams run together. However, they are scored separately. So, it will get a bit confusing. It is very difficult to follow where some teams finish.

For example, if the Holy Cross girls, a Class 2A team, win the Distance Medley and say, Elk Lake girls finish fourth overall, but are the second Class 2A team to finish, they finish second in the Class 2A team competition. Those two relay teams are scored with Holy Cross earning 10 points, and Elk Lake earning 8 among Class 2A schools. I know, hard to follow. Let’s leave it up to Adam and Wil-Time.
