Good Wednesday morning to you all!

The early haze is burning off and it’s going to be another summer-like afternoon in NEPA and I have leafed through the results from the last several days. There have been some outstanding matches and the calendar is going fast. The District 2 team playoffs begin October 5 and both the Class 3A and Class 2A brackets are quite large, so getting the regular season completed on time is very important.

In the last two weeks, many of the wrinkles of the season have been ironed out. Both Abington Heights and Scranton Prep have withstood the challenge from North Pocono. If you recall, Abington Heights defeated the Lady Trojans, 3-2, in one of the most competitive matches in the Lackawanna League in a long time. On Tuesday, Scranton Prep defeated North Pocono, 5-0, to stay undefeated. The head-to-head clash featured Scranton Prep’s Gabi Jakubek, the area’s No. 1 player, beating No. 3 Sarah Tofilska, 6-0, 5-7, 6-3. There is also some concern, as Scranton Prep’s Carly Habeeb defeated North Pocono’s Sarah Sposito, who had to retire because of injury. We certainly want to wish Sarah a speedy recovery as she gets ready for the postseason.

Scranton Prep 5, North Pocono 0

Singles: Gabriela Jakubek over Sarah Tofilska, 6-0, 5-7, 6-3; Carly Habeeb over Sarah Sposito, 3-6, 6-3, inj. def.; Isabel Hou over Haley Zemek, 6-1, 6-1

Doubles: Megan McDonald-Camilla Rinaldi over Devyn Davis-Megan Carney, 6-4, 6-3; Julia Horchos-Madison Tratthen over Ashley Dunn-Tiana Mackarey, 6-3, 6-1.

Records: SP 10-0, NP 7-2.

The Rivalry

So, with that result, and there are some matches still to be played, it all but secures the annual rivalry match of the season will take place Monday between two undefeated teams.

Abington Heights (10-0) will visit Scranton Prep (10-0) at 4 p.m.

in the annual showdown between the two tennis powerhouse programs.

INSIDE THE NUMBERS

It is looking like, or who am I kidding, the winner of the Abington Heights-Scranton Prep match will be the Lackawanna League champion. That is just a preview of the postseason. The District 2 Class 3A and Class 2A tournaments will determine the best teams from both the Lackawanna League and the Wyoming Valley Conference.

Mike Ognosky does a great job of keeping track of all the results on piaad2.org. There are a lot of postseason spots available, and the pursuit of those spots is intensifying.

Here is a list of the rescheduled matches in the Lackawanna League which will impact the playoff push.
