Good Wednesday everyone!

Hope you all had a nice Labor Day holiday. It’s been a busy time of the year in tennis in the Lackawanna League. There had been action across the board the last few days even with some troubling weather. In that regard, let’s all remember and think about, or help, in the relief efforts in Houston and now in Florida.

Onto the courts. There were several matches played and for those teams able to get them in, we are getting close to midseason. Others have a lot of rescheduled matches ahead. Each year around this time, you kind of get a pretty good handle on the chase for the league championship. One of the most important matches of the season will be Thursday when Abington Heights visits North Pocono. Both teams will be undefeated heading into that matchup. Of course, we all expect Scranton Prep to also be a factor. The Classics have matches ahead scheduled at home against North Pocono on Sept. 13 and home against Abington Heights on Sept. 25.

Because it seems like we are a skipping record when discussing the Lackawanna League with Scranton Prep and Abington Heights in terms of the team championship race, but there are always exciting stories within the season. This week, while I was compiling the singles records, I noticed a couple of really bright spots.

Riverside’s Samantha Labrosky.

Lady Vikes success

Trinity Gable

Riverside, while only 1-3 overall, has had a couple of very good performances on the court. No. 1 singles player Samantha Labrosky is off to a 3-1 start to her season. In 2015, Labrosky finished with a 1-14 record while playing at No. 2 singles. Last season, she improved to 4-10 and won her first-round match over Tunkhannock’s Autumn Grey at the District 2 Class 2A Singles Championships. This season, she has wins over Western Wayne’s Allison Mattern, Montrose’s Mckenzie Reeves and Mid Valley’s Karah Laboranti, and her only loss is to unbeaten Sarah Tofilska of North Pocono. Now there are some very tough challenges ahead, but Labrosky has clearly shown improvement in her three seasons and is a player to keep an eye on throughout the season. Her teammate, Trinity Gable is also having success. She was 1-27 in singles matches the last two seasons. In 2016, Gable has started the season, 4-0 at No. 3 singles.

Johnson winning

West Scranton’s Rebecca Johnson.

West Scranton is at 1-4 in the Lackawanna League, however Rebecca Johnson won her third match of the season last week. Johnson went 2-12 in 2015 and played only two singles matches last season, going 0-2. This season, while competing at No. 2, she has wins over Valley View’s Sidney Reinfort, Dunmore’s Lauren Brown, and Honesdale’s Madison Palmer.

BIG MATCH AHEAD

Abington Heights’ Lauren Carroll

North Pocono’s Sarah Tofilska

In addition to there being some outstanding team matches on the horizon, there are also much-anticipated singles showdowns. Beginning, obviously, Thursday when Abington Heights standout Lauren Carroll will face North Pocono’s Sarah Tofilska. Both players will go into the match undefeated.

  • On Friday of last week, Carroll improved to 5-0 with a straight-sets win over Wallenpaupack’s Phoebe Cykosky, 6-1, 7-6 (5), in a battle between top-ranked players. Tofilska is a returning Lackawanna League all-star and is 5-0 overall after having her match halted by rain Tuesday.

There are rescheduled matches from Tuesday to this afternoon, but I looked out my window and it is pouring:

  • Scranton at Honesdale

Another was rescheduled to SEPTEMBER 12

  • Holy Cross at Riverside

Others are rescheduled to the dreaded TBA

  • Montrose at Abington Heights

That is all for today.

My plan is to cover the Abington Heights at North Pocono match on Thursday before I head out and do my GameFace feature for football.

I am looking forward to getting away from Command Central in my kitchen and see two of the best teams in District 2 Class 3A.

Next post ON THE BLOG will be WEDNESDAY.

ENJOY!
