Welcome to the Wednesday post ON THE BLOG.

As expected it was an exciting first day of the week in the Lackawanna League. On Tuesday, Riverside freshman Karissa Ghigiarelli firmly took hold of the No. 1 ranking in the league by remaining undefeated after a straight-sets win over No. 2 Phoebe Cykosky of Wallenpaupack. The match was the most challenging of the season for the newcomer at Riverside who is one of the top players with a bright future on the USTA Middle States competitions. Cykosky did win three games in the match ending Ghigiarelli’s shutout streak in the 6-2, 6-1 win. How will this match impact the rankings? Well, we have other important information to go through before we answer that question.

There are some important matches as we approach the mid-season point. On Thursday, unbeaten Abington Heights is at Valley View, which posted a pair of big wins to climb back into the District 2 Class 2A playoff race. Also, Mid Valley, which suffered its first loss of the season to Abington Heights, will be at Western Wayne in another critical match in the District 2 Class 2A playoff picture.

All of this precludes the biggest regular-season matchup of the season coming Monday.

District 2 Power Ratings

NOTE: From piaad2.org

In accordance with the District II move to the Power Rating System for team playoff championships, the TOP 8 power ranked teams in each classification will participate in the team tournament regardless of league affiliation. Champions will not receive special seeding privileges and will be ranked ONLY based on their power rating. In addition, any other team in a classification that finishes with EITHER a .500 league winning percentage or a .500 overall winning percentage and finishes outside of the top 8 in power rating will also qualify for the tournament – so there is a potential for more than 8 teams to qualify in a bracket.
