Happy Easter!

It’s Sunday and The Times-Tribune puts the finishing touches on the winter sports season. Today, we announce the 2016-17 Times-Tribune All-Region Swimming Team.

It was a great season. I began covering swimming full time in the 2009-10 season. I remember it like it was yesterday. The conversation went a little like this. … “Joby, how would you like to cover swimming?” At the time, our swimming beat writer was ready to depart for a new job. My reply, “Sure, I will do what I can.” That first year, Scranton Prep sophomore Rebekah Campo earned Swiimmer of the Year honors, and went on to earn two more in the next two seasons. Today, her sister, Audrey Campo, captured her second straight Swimmer of the Year honor for the girls team.

This week, Audrey, made her college decision official and will attend Duquesne University in Pittsburgh.

Interestingly, in my eight years, all eight Swimmers of the Year have competed at Scranton Prep and they are all Division I athletes.

  • 2009-10: Scranton Prep’s Rebekah Campo — Lehigh University
  • 2010-11: Scranton Prep’s Rebekah Campo — Lehigh University
  • 2011-12: Scranton Prep’s Rebekah Campo — Lehigh University
  • 2012-13: Scranton Prep’s Mia Nonnenberg — University of Alabama
  • 2013-14: Scranton Prep’s Mia Nonnenberg — University of Alabama
  • 2014-15: Scranton Prep’s Katie Voitik — Manhattan College
  • 2015-16: Scranton Prep’s Audrey Campo — Duquesne University
  • 2016-17: Scranton Prep’s Audrey Campo — Duquesne University

This year’s team, also includes Scranton Prep’s Cat Donlon, who made her decision to compete at the University of Delaware this week, and Delaware Valley’s Denali Hutzelmann, who are both four-year selections.

On the boys team, Scranton’s Aidan Drouse is the Swimmer of the Year after a record-setting season. Aidan is only a sophomore, so if things continue on this curve, we could be looking at an athletes who is anchored in for a couple of seasons. He is following in the footsteps of his father, Dave Drouse, who was a standout swimmer in his athletic days, as well. And it’s a family affair, as freshman Nick Drouse is also a member of the team.

The team also features West Scranton senior Michael Bruno, a two-time state-medal winner and two-time selection to the All-Region team as a diver. Scranton’s Alex Schaefer, Western Wayne’s Ben Hollister, Scranton Prep’s Thomas Pfaeffle, and Delaware Valley’s Liam Naturale are all repeat members of the team.

Once again, my design guy, Conor Foley, hooked me up. If you all think it’s easy to cutout all of the individual photos for these packages, it’s not. After seeing him in action late into Friday night, I have a new appreciation for how difficult it is to produce these pages.

So, here’s what we have for you.
