Mark McGwire’s hedging admission that he used steroids over the length of his Major League Baseball career came as a surprise to absolutely no one, except maybe Big Mac himself. In any event, this statement of the obvious along and its self-serving backstory (he’s been hired by his old team as a hitting coach, which has more or less forced him to clear the air) rings hollow to my ears.

As the old saying goes, “honor means doing the right thing when no one’s watching.” By extension, that would include telling the truth when you have nothing to gain by it.
