The Battle of Tarawa was a battle in the Pacific Theater of World War II that was fought on 20–23 November 1943. Nearly 6,400 Japanese, Koreans, and Americans died in the fighting.

The National Archives has some pretty amazing photos and video of the battle.

With the Marines at Tarawa,” a film produced by the United States government, shows the battle first hand and won the 1945 Academy Award for best documentary short.

The film is far more graphic than footage you would see theses days and the the language would certainly not be considered politically correct these days:
