You can probably argue that this one is the biggest loss Penn State has suffered in the year of the transfer portal.

Kenny Sanders, who has worked in the Nittany Lions’ recruiting department since 2014, announced that he is heading to the University of Oregon to become director of recruiting for the Ducks.

This is no small loss for James Franklin and his staff. Sanders was one of those behind-the-scenes guys who did a ton, and staffers like him are becoming increasingly valuable in college football today. Those big recruiting days — like the White Outs — when you see hundreds of prospects lining up on the sidelines, taking in the atmosphere? Sanders played a big role helping to organize those days and make sure they run smoothly, making the experience as good as it can be for those kids. The coaches get plenty of credit, and rightfully so, for the quality of recruiting classes. But guys like Sanders are just as big a reason Penn State has been so successful sealing the deal on so many big recruits.

Sanders is now the second member of Franklin’s behind-the-scenes staff that has left the program in the last few months for a big promotion. Dwight Galt IV, a longtime assistant strength and conditioning coach who was really respected by the players, left last month to become Director of Sports Performance at Old Dominion.
