Donald Trump lies so reflexively, it’s hard to choose which lies to pay attention to and which to dismiss as more extemporaneous excrement spewing from the sewer of his tiny mind.
Sometimes, it takes a while for the news to catch up with the president’s runaway mouth. That happened Tuesday with the testimony of U.S. Army Lt. Col. Alexander Vindman, a Purple Heart combat veteran of the Iraq War, before the House Intelligence Committee running the impeachment inquiry.
A Ukraine expert and member of the National Security Council, Vindman told House investigators that the rough “transcript” of Trump’s “perfect” July 25 phone call with Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelensky was edited by White House officials who understood that the boss had crossed the line. Among the deliberate omissions, Vindman said, was a direct mention of former Vice President Joe Biden and his son, Hunter.
Still unwilling to Dump Trump, Cult 45 armchair warriors in Congress, on talk radio and Fox “News” smeared Col. Vindman as an “immigrant” with an “affinity” for Ukraine and an anti-Trump agenda. The disgusting attack on a bona fide American war hero who dedicated his life to serving his country inspired many to wistfully recall a time when conservative Republicans and Fox hosts revered the military. It was always a con.
If Col. Vindman had come forward with evidence exonerating Trump, Fox and Friends would hail him as an unimpeachable American hero bravely standing by his commander-in-chief. Because Col. Vindman bravely stood up with sworn testimony that incriminates Trump, he is smeared and ridiculed for honoring his oath to protect and defend the Constitution. Nothing is sacred to Cult 45. Serving Trump at any cost is their divine purpose.
All evidence so far revealed makes it clear that Trump held up almost $400 million in military aid to extort his Ukrainian counterpart into inventing political dirt on the Bidens. Team Trump relentlessly denies the obvious and impeachment-triggering “quid pro quo” in a desperate campaign to convince Americans not to believe their own eyes, ears and minds.
If only there was a verbatim transcript of the call to remove any microbe of doubt about what Trump said to Zelensky.
There is. The same White House officials who understood the boss crossed the line hid it in a super top-secret server. This is important for many reasons, not the least of which is a preposterous lie the president has been saying and tweeting for nearly a month — that the rough “transcript” the White House grudgingly released is a verbatim account of the call. It’s not. The memo itself notes that. You’d think Trump would read it. It’s about him.
For Trump, lying is easier. At a recent press conference, President Trump said:
“I had a transcript done by very, very talented people — word for word, comma for comma. Done by people that do it for a living. We had an exact transcript… an exact transcript of my call, done by very talented people that do this — exact, word for word.”
And on Twitter:
“Democrat’s game was foiled when we caught Schiff fraudulently making up my Ukraine conversation, when I released the exact conversation Transcript.”
“The so-called Whistleblower, before knowing I was going to release the exact Transcript, stated that my call with the Ukrainian President was ‘crazy, frightening, and completely lacking in substance related to national security.’ This is a very big Lie. Read the Transcript!”
“Where is the Whistleblower, or the 2nd Whistleblower, or the ‘informant?’ All gone because their so-called story didn’t come even close to matching up with the exact transcript of the phone call.”
Even by Trump standards, this is a stupid lie. An unforced error. An undeniable sign that Trump is unraveling as the walls close in. When — not if — the actual verbatim transcript is revealed, Col. Vindman, the Mystery Whistleblower and all who testified about Trump’s “perfect” call will be vindicated.
Trump will be Trump, and for once, wish he was anyone else.
