I rarely say this, but Nancy Pelosi is right.
In a recent interview with Joe Helm of the Washington Post, the House Speaker made it clear that despite public pressure and the blind rage of some rookie Democrats in Congress, she is in no rush to impeach the 45th President of the United States.
“I’m not for impeachment,” Pelosi said. “This is news. I’m going to give you some news right now because I haven’t said this to any press person before. But since you asked, and I’ve been thinking about this: Impeachment is so divisive to the country that unless there’s something so compelling and overwhelming and bipartisan, I don’t think we should go down that path, because it divides the country. And he’s just not worth it.”
I’ll take that last dig and do Pelosi one better: President Trump doesn’t deserve impeachment. Neither do Americans who allowed this time-lapse trainwreck to happen. Trump was elected to the most powerful position on the planet.
We did that. Us.
Impeachment proceedings would be a gift to Trump, an ugly, unrelenting spectacle generating an inexhaustible supply of red meat to feed the cult of personality that has elevated him to god-like status. Last week, Trump was in Alabama, autographing the Bibles of tornado survivors.
He. Was. Autographing. Bibles. One he apparently signed at a 2016 rally turned up on eBay this week. Top bid as of 10:30 this morning was $625. To his devoted base, Trump can do no wrong.
Trump is a master showman. No one plays the martyr better or relishes it more. Impeachment would serve Trump the way bread and circuses served the Caesars, a mass distraction from his many failures and manifest unfitness for office.
Trump is miserable, stuck in a job he never really wanted and has no clue how to do. Impeachment would be a cake-walk for him, no matter how it turned out.
Unless Robert Mueller turns up hard evidence that Trump and his campaign colluded with the Russian government to steal the presidency, Trump should keep it until someone else wins it.
Pelosi and the Dems should keep pushing to expose Trump for the fraud he is, but get real with themselves about what it will take to beat him in 2020. Meanwhile, Americans who don’t vote or pride themselves on voting for outliers who can’t win must get real with themselves about the consequences of their actions.
Trump doesn’t deserve impeachment. It would let him off the hook. Us, too.
