If you have little or no confidence in the current Scranton School Board‘s ability to navigate the towering waves of debt threatening to drown the district and the taxpayers who strain to keep it seaworthy, you’ve been paying attention.

If you are comforted by the current captain’s empty promises of smooth sailing ahead, you have booked a watery grave in Steerage.

Passengers in either camp should report for tonight’s all-hands-on-deck event. The 10 candidates vying for board seats will face public examination tonight at a debate hosted by The Times-Tribune. The event is open to the public and will run from 6 to 7:30 p.m. in the historic fifth-floor radio theater of the Scranton Times Building, 149 Penn Ave.

Moderated by Teri Ooms, executive director of the Wilkes-Barre-based Institute for Public Policy & Economic Development, the debate is emblematic of this newspaper‘s commitment to community journalism since 1895. If you can, please be there.

If you can’t be there, watch the live streaming broadcast at thetimes-tribune.com. Either way, you just might come away with a more informed opinion of who qualifies to face the savage storms ahead.
