The last book in J.R.R. Tolkien‘s “Lord of the Rings” trilogy has always been my favorite, because it chronicles the resolution of a thinly veiled allegory of totalitarianism, its depredations and the sacrifices required to repel it. The good guys win, but at heart-rending cost.
Identifying good guys and bad guys has always been a matter of perspective. Once as simple as counting white hats and black hats, we now have to discern between heroes and villains who exploit the shades of gray that color the world we all live in.
The last King of America was George III. Today, we are saddled with Trump the First, whose voluntary subjects worship him like a divine right emperor. He vanquished the wicked dragon Hillary, and can do no wrong that eclipses his slim victory in the Electoral College.
King Trump returns to Our Stiff Neck of the Woods on Thursday.at 7 p.m. rally at Mohegan Sun Arena at Casey Plaza. He’s coming to pump up the anemic campaign of U.S. Rep. Lou Barletta, R-ICE, who is running against U.S. Sen. Bob Casey, D-THE ARENA IS NAMED AFTER MY DAD.
Whatever your idea of good guys and bad guys, the event is bound to draw both worshipful subjects and defiant rebels. I’ll be there as an enemy of the people. How about you?
