I rarely agree with U.S. Reps. Lou Barletta and Tom Marino, but anything is possible in the Age of Trump. Both have called for the release of a controversial memo about the FBI investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 election.
The FBI has urged against the release of the memo, which was composed by House Intelligence Chairman Rep. Devin Nunes. The secret screed reportedly accuses the FBI and the Justice Department of abusing their investigation powers in a “Deep State” conspiracy to bring down President Trump.
The FBI and Justice Department warn that releasing the memo could jeopardize national security, which Trump apologists cite as evidence the nation’s top law enforcement institutions can’t be trusted.
Common sense says Nunes and the rest of the GOP are bluffing. If they had anything resembling a “smoking gun” that would discredit the FBI investigation, they would be waving it anywhere and everywhere. Fox “News” would run with it 24/7.
Trump’s White House handlers say he hasn’t read the memo, but he wants it released. That could (and should) happen today. Pro-Trump Republicans have made mountains of political hay out of this memo without revealing a single detail.
It’s time to put up or shut up.
If the Nunes memo is the exculpatory holy grail Trump backers claim it is, the White House and GOP should reveal it to the American people. If the Nunes memo is just another distraction in a futile attempt to save a presidency that was doomed from the start, the GOP should be made to explain why.
Release the memo.
