Driving to work this morning, I heard an employment ad that sold its sponsor short. United States Penitentiary Canaan is hiring, but the spot made no mention of the Waymart facility’s new celebrity inmate.
Former Trump campaign chief Paul Manafort landed at USP Canaan on Tuesday to begin serving a 7.5 year sentence that could have been at least three times longer. Manafort, 70, was convicted and pleaded guilty in 2018 to a slew of charges of fraud, tax evasion and conspiracy. Barring a pardon from President Trump, Manafort will be a Wayne County resident until Christmas 2024.
So far, Trump has said he isn’t considering a pardon, but he feels “very badly” about the courts treating Paul like a common criminal. He’s so much more than that, which us why the prison should try to capitalize on Manafort’s star power. Imagine an ad like:
