“How’s Ukraine doing? …How long would they last in a fight with Russia?”

“I don’t think very long. Without us, not very long… The biggest problem there, I think, where we, where you, need to start is we got to get rid of the ambassador. She’s basically walking around telling everybody, ‘Wait, he’s going to get impeached, just wait.’”

“Get rid of her. Get her out tomorrow. I don’t care. Get her out tomorrow. Take her out. O.K.? Do it.”

The above exchange was recorded by a man President Trump doesn’t know while Trump talked about something he didn’t do. It’s not even the latest of an armory of smoking guns the president keeps firing into his clay feet. Trump’s endless avalanche of obvious lies would be laughable if he wasn’t leading the free world into the tar pits.

The recording was released Saturday by Joseph A. Bondy, a lawyer for Lev Parnas, one of the thugs who conspired with Rudy Giuliani to shake down Ukraine to help Trump cheat in the 2020 election. The recording was made on the cellphone of another thug, Igor Fruman, who along with Parnas has been indicted on criminal campaign finance charges.

Like any other rat who sees the water rising around him, Parnas jumped ship and tossed a wet blanket on the preposterous case Trump’s lawyers are shoveling at his impeachment trial. Trump continues to deny knowing Parnas and Fruman despite the recording and acres of photos of Trump and his family with the two thugs grinning like cartoon sharks, Ivanka included.

Bondy said his hope was to convince Senate Republicans bent on acquitting Trump at any cost to open the trial to witnesses and evidence Team Trump is hiding. The Republicans yawned. Then John Bolton stood up and said, “Hold my mustache.”

As you might have heard, Trump’s former national security advisor has a tell-all book coming out. It’s called “The Room Where it Happened.” Where what happened? Well, according to a leaked draft of the book, Trump told Bolton all about his shakedown of Ukraine, the thing Trump absolutely did with the thugs he totally knows.

The leak intensified the pressure on Republicans to call Bolton to testify, which he will do, under oath or in print. The truth will come out. Whether it hurts Trump or the entire GOP is up to 53 Republican senators who are holding themselves hostage to a crook whose guilt grows more obvious by the day and a base that doesn’t care what Trump does as long as he stays in office.

As I noted in my Sunday column (Read it here), GOP senators are on trial here, not Trump. So far, they have chosen to go down with the ship alongside the scurvy dog who keeps punching holes in the hull.

Trump’s lawyers are on deck when the trial recommences at 1 p.m. Republicans, start bailing now.
