I’ll be the last to begrudge a young boy’s birthday wish to ride in a real fire truck, but the manner in which Olyphant resident and Democratic activist Brian Doughton and Lackawanna County Commissioner candidate Debi Domenick handled this matter stinks of politics, despite their claims to the contrary. Otherwise, the Olyphant Hose Co.’s engine — which is at least partly funded at taxpayer expense — would be available for birthday parties anywhere in the county, regardless of partisan affiliations. Further, what if an actual emergency occurred in Olyphant, and one of its primary vehicles is sitting 4.5 miles away at a birthday party in Dunmore? In short, this looks like another example of county politics trumping the public’s interest.
