Pennsylvania GOP Rep. Charlie Dent’s decision to leave office before the end of his term (he announced last year that he would not run for re-election) left many people scratching their heads. His early exit may well force the party to hold an expensive special election in a congressional district that will cease to exist come January. Dent claims he wants to spend more time with his family (doesn’t everybody?) and wants to pursue job opportunities in the private sector. My guess is that he, like many centrist and moderate Republicans, also is done with the far-right, chaotic rage-machine that his party has become under Trump.
