Call it wishful thinking on my part, but here’s to hoping that real change is afoot regarding U.S. gun laws in the wake of the Valentine’s Day mass shooting at Stoneman High School in Parkland, FL. If that change is to occur, the impetus will have to come from the kids who survived the shooter’s attack. The starting point will be either bans or substantial limitations on legal access to the AR-15-style semiautomatic assault rifle, the preferred weapon of homicidal maniacs coast-to-coast. For his part, Trump’s been all over the map in the issue, both suggesting solutions both obvious (raising the age limit for buying these weapons) and flatly stupid (paying teachers a bonus to pack heat).
