I love beauty products so you know I hate wasting them.
It especially pains me to throw out a nearly full tube of mascara just because it’s expired. Mascara typically expires within 3 to 6 months and that’s never enough time to use up the whole tube. I don’t mess with expiration dates of stuff that goes by my eyes, though. Maybe it’s because they’re huge and there’s more surface area to irritate but if any eye product is expired, I toss it immediately.
To cut down on my sadness, I’ve had this little hack for a few years now.
I only buy mini mascaras.
Almost every brand (except Glossier — C’MON BIG G!) makes a tiny version of their best mascara and, typically, at less than half the price. Unless I truly love a mascara (GLOSSIER LASH SLICK) I only buy the mini version, such as as Lancôme Monsieur Big Mascara (in regular and waterproof) for $12 as opposed to the full-size’s $25 price tag.
Sometimes, you can even get a bunch of minis in gift sets like Benefit Cosmetics Lash Leaders Trio with BADgal BANG Volumizing Mascara, They’re Real! Lengthening & Volumizing Mascara and Roller Lash Curling & Lifting Mascara, or Tarte Lash Money Mini Mascara Set that comes with Lights, Camera, Lashes 4-in-1 Mascara, Tarteist Lash Paint Mascara and Gifted Amazonian Clay Smart Mascara plus Opening Act Lash Primer.
More gift sets usually pop around holiday time and even more of them go on sale after the holiday is over so it’s great time to shop for baby mascaras.
I match my look to my mood and some days I like a ton of volume and drama whereas other days I want a more natural vibe. Picking a different one every day gives me creative agency over my makeup and stocking up on mini mascaras is easy on my wallet. Plus it’s less devastating to throw away a small tube when its time in my makeup bag is up.
Try it out next time you’re in the market for a new mascara. Good things absolutely come in small packages.
