Scranton High School senior Shelby Funchess had a productive week, totaling 52 points in three victories. She scored 19 points in a win over West Scranton, posted a double-double of 18 points and 12 rebounds against Honesdale and had 15 points against Pocono Mountain East. That effort earned her Athlete of the Week honors.
Here is more from Funchess’ interview:
Favorite sports team: Houston Rockets
Athlete you admire: James Harden. People talk bad about him all the time. But he’s a really incredible player and shows it all the time.
Favorite food: Nina’s pizza
Superstitions and rituals: Right before the game starts, I take a deep breath and count to five. Then I don’t think about anything else. I just focus on the game.
Three people I’d like to have dinner with: James Harden, J. Cole, Dwyane Wade
One of the wins came against city rival West Scranton. Is the rivalry as intense between the schools as it is in football with the “Battle for the Bell”? It’s not as intense, but it’s just the fact you beat them. Plus, I just really wanted to win the game because we didn’t start the season so good. It would help us get going.
Last season the team won the District 2 Class 6A title. What was that experience like? It was amazing. It felt good and showed that all the hard work paid off.
You are 6-feet tall. Teammates Colette Mulderig is 6-foot-2 and Kristy Hart is 6-foot-1. How do your games complement each other? We all know our capabilities. We look for each other and we help share the ball with each other. Colette is probably the scorer and Hart is a hard defender. I think I rebound and defend well sometimes and help score, too. I think it helps us that we each have different post moves that we use.
