Good Thursday to all of you volleyball fans!

That’s right today is the first serve of ON THE BLOG for the 2017 season. The volleyball year always gets off to a later start than most and the action is fast and furious because unlike the other fall sports, weather cannot play a factor in the schedule. The only thing that causes a bit of a struggle is Friday Football, because the Lackawanna League still hosts matches on Fridays. Because of that, sometimes the start to the season gets a little lost among busy weekends.

But, we are going to do our best with another season here.

If you caught my preseason preview — And I know you all did — the usual suspects are picked to challenge for titles this fall with Blue Ridge and Dunmore receiving equal consideration for the Lackawanna League crown and Delaware Valley being given more than a fighter’s chance to stay atop the standings in the Wyoming Valley Conference.

The season got of to a fast start with the first play date. Blue Ridge defeated Montrose, 3-0, and Dunmore beat Lackawanna Trail, 3-0. Also, Abington Heights, which teams better keep an eye on, beat Elk Lake, 3-0, and Western Wayne, which is also considered a contender, defeated Forest City, 3-1.

That set up two very early season big matches in the Lackawanna League.
