Day 1 of the 2018 AROUND THE CAMPS opened with pulverizing rays of sun and a sweltering heat that escalated into the 90s by mid-afternoon.

The journey began with a visit to the most successful program of the last decade. The tour car arrived on campus at 9 a.m. for a story on returning linebacker George Mesko. Then, it continued to Lakeland High School where Jeff Wasilchak doesn’t have many players on the roster, but does have some talent. And finally, the last stop was at Scranton Memorial Stadium for a visit with first-year head coach Steve Shumbres.

Antonio Spataro is a returning starter at both center and linebacker for the Chiefs. Last season, he helped Lakeland reach the District 2 Class 2A playoffs after starting the season 1-4.

Scranton is under the guidance of Steve Shumbres who is entering his first season as the head coach. He had spent several seasons as the program’s offensive coordinator. He coached Robbie McAndrew, who graduated, last season. With his graduation, McAndrew left a huge vacancy in the lineup for 2018.
