Folks, the Lackawanna League and the Wyoming Valley Conference both concluded their regular seasons without any unnecessary playoff games to determine league champions.

Now, for the first time in probably 20 years, teams do take a much needed break to recharge the batteries as they get ready for the District 2 Tournament.

Before we examine the postseason projections (nothing is official until the District 2 Committee rubber stamps it on Sunday), we need to congratulate the final two Lackawanna League Champions.

DIVISION III

Holy Cross defeated Carbondale Area to capture the title. Since the program started after the closing of Bishop Hannan and Bishop O’Hara, Holy Cross has won six Lackawanna League division titles, and since the league went to four divisions has three in six seasons.

DIVISION IV

Susquehanna did it. Interesting story. Three years ago, a sports writer visited Susquehanna to do a video on one of their players, Sean Branning. At that time, the players — EVERY ONE — shook that reporter’s hand and introduced themselves. When his interruption was complete, coach Lawrence Tompkins reminded his players that to get that report to write about them again, they would have to keep working and improve on an 0-12 Division IV record. One player said, “We will give you a reason.” That player and his teammates kept that promise. The Sabers won the Lackawanna Division IV title. So, the reporter called that player, remembering who it was. … And he wrote about them winning.

DISTRICT 2 PLAYOFFS

Barring any unforeseen mathematical errors, here are the projections for the postseason. Williamsport still has a game tonight vs. Altoona, but it still shouldn’t catch Scranton in Class 6A.

Again — Nothing is “OFFICIAL” until Sunday. These are only projections.
